Addictions are sneaky. They offer a way out of problems and difficulties but end up trapping and enslaving in the end. An addiction may start out offering a means of escape from a problem but eventually becomes a problem itself. An addiction, whether it be to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sex, even love, can soothe feelings of anxiety, fear, loneliness, shame, and helplessness. Addictions can make the user feel powerful, loved, peaceful, the life of the party, and free. But addictions are crutches that prevent the individual from experiencing life to the fullest.
Overcoming an addiction first starts with recognizing the addiction and admitting to it. Denial will prevent the individual from getting help and most addictions cannot be overcome without help. Rare is the individual who can overcome an addiction, especially a long-held one, without outside assistance, encouragement, and support.
Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Sex Addicts Anonymous, CODA and others offer help to overcome strangeholds like addiction. They offer comfort, sympathy, and courage to take the first step and admit to the addiction. Becoming part of a 12-step program that addresses the addicts helplessness and lack of control over the addiction is the first step in the healing process.
Getting to the root of the problem is the next step. It's one thing to get sober; it's another to pull the problem out by the root so another addiction doesn't step in to take the place of the first. In many cases, the addictive cycle started in childhood when the individual was a victim to out-of-control behavior by caregivers. Counseling, therapy, and perhaps even antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs can help a person face the demons of the past. Getting help is not easy but it is essential.
